    Ladies Weekend, not 100%

    Reviewed by: Angela G. on

We arrived for girls weekend and had a great time! It took about 25 minutes to get to down town Traverse City and the cottage description was accurate. I had one question and recieved a response right away. This cottage is purely a 'rental property' it seemed. The drain in one of the showers backed up with peeling paint, there were sheets over some of the windows, some very old bunk bed mattresses, and the other shower leaked onto the floor when in use. Very large spider webs in multiple rooms of this cottage. Although the cottage was surface cleaned with clean linens and floors and counters, it was lacking in 'up-keep'.If you aren't picky and are looking for a relaxing get away this place might be for you!

Nice house and location for families with little ones. The lake was clean with a sandy bottom. Also close enough to Traverse City for eating out and shopping. We all thought the kitchen and familyroom and location were the highlights. There were 2 tvs but only 1 worked. Really no one wanted to watch much television anyway.

    Great family-friendly getaway!

We had a great experience at the Island House as a party of 6 (5 adults, 1 child). The house was clean, comfortable, and spacious. The beach front was perfect for a young family, with a shallow, sandy beach and lots of water toys. We would absolutely consider coming back. The renovated kitchen was spacious and easy to use, and we loved the open floorplan with lots of living areas and large dining room table. Tom was responsive to our questions, and the next door neighbor (John) was very helpful. He brought us firewood and extra beach toys. We enjoyed walking around the lake (it's a workout because of the hills!) and kayaking. The lake was very quiet throughout the day, despite staying in late July. Reviews from 2017 and 2018 both mentioned that the tub in bathroom #2 did not drain well. We were disappointed that this was still the case in 2019. After a 5-minute shower, there was quite a bit of standing water which also caused sand to remain in the shower. Perhaps this is not an easy fix and more extensive plumbing work is required to resolve it. If that's the case, we feel like renters deserve to know this and should not be surprised by it. A note to this effect as part of the check-in materials would have gone a long way. Bathroom #2 also had no hooks for hanging damp towels or washcloths. As mentioned in other reviews, the house cools down quickly at night and the lack of central A/C was not a problem. There was a unit in the main living area that can provide a bit of relief if needed.

This place was perfect for an extended weekend for a girls getaway. The view was amazing, the beds were comfortable and the dining table was perfect for family style eating, playing cards and games. The Lake was so calm and having kayaks at our disposal was such a bonus. The neighbors (John and Marty) were friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. The owner was great and very quick to respond to any questions we had. The icing on the cake was hearing the call of the loon that landed in the lake as we were packing up to go home. I would highly recommend this place.

Lovely location. The lake is as beautiful as the home. We felt drawn to stay around the house more than we might typically do, because it was so lovely. The location is close enough to Traverse City to enjoy but far enough away to get the peace of up north. We used the row boat for fishing adventures that landed us several big large mouth bass as eagles flew overhead.

    Great house, great location!

    Reviewed by: Derek on

We just returned from our weekend stay at this property and it was fantastic. We went up with two other friends and had three kids. Its great to find a rental that had king beds in the main bedrooms, and the bunk beds were great for the kids. The house has a lot of nice touches and I disagree with a lot of one of the past reviews points. For one, the second bathroom does have a long rod for the toilet paper, but it's so it can hold more than one roll so you don't have to worry about running out during the stay.

There were plenty of cups, maybe they just didn't look much. Also the sand thing is ridiculous, it's a house on the lake. The beach is 20 feet away from the back door and it's impossible to keep sand out.

Anyway, it's a great location and a great price, especially for a larger group. We were only 15-20 minutes from all the places we went over our trip. There is a lot of good kids toys and kid proofing stuff if you do bring kids along. Kitchen was well stocked, appliances were new, and having flat screen TVs and a Roku were great for when the kids needed a nap and we just needed some quiet time. Also not sure if it was only temporary, but there was a portable AC unit set up. It never got really hot during our trip, but it was a nice option to have. Will try to go here again the next time we want to visit the area Thank you!

Nice lake, great for kids, house just OK

    Reviewed by: Cate M. on

The lake really is beautiful and very shallow, making it perfect for small children. They loved jumping off the dock, and the row boat and canoes were a nice addition. The house though, left much to be desired. It was quite dirty...our friend dropped something under their bed when unpacking and there was a dirty tissue under the bed. We had to move a bit of furniture to accommodate pack n plays and there were cobwebs and sand everywhere. I get most people don't clean under their beds on a regular basis, but every piece of large furniture had sand under it. Even once a month deep clean would be good! We had trim fall off the wall twice in different places after barely brushing against the wall. A few other things: 2nd bathtub doesn't drain - buy some Drano and fix this immediately! The paper towel holder in the 2nd bath is a TV tray with a branch from outside across the bottom that the TP hangs off of. Most of the towels were rags with strings hanging off everywhere. You can get cheap towels at Target/Walmart. There were a handful of cups for adults which was very bizarre. Tons of cups for kids and wine glasses, but maybe 3-4 water cups. It's a good thing the lake and fire pit were so nice because the house wasn't that impressive. We had a great time with friends and if things mentioned above aren't important to you, then you'll be fine.

    Manager's Response:
Cate, we're glad your group had a pleasant stay overall and you loved the lake, but we are sorry to hear certain aspects of your stay fell short of your expectations. We have shared your insight with the homeowner who would like to pass along the following message:

"We value each of our guest groups and always are responsive and accommodating to requests. That being said, in order for me to address issues and ‘make things right’ it is most effective to just reach out to me (phone number provided to rental groups to call or text anytime if things come up or questions arise.

So, after reading this review (which was the first I heard of new towels and cups being needed) I ordered them from Amazon and they are being delivered overnight.

I talked with the company that cleans our family cabin post rental to let them know about the report of the underbed sand/cobweb report and asked that they increase the frequency of their underfurniture cleaning. This is our family’s cabin and our sole ‘rental’. We make great effort to keep our cabin updated, clean and in order. Please do remember though that this cabin is in the beautiful northern Michigan forest and is also lakeside (and very very close to the beach and waterfront). We are conscious that the natural environment that you are visiting, including sand, does get into the house. The cleaning crew had been cleaning under furniture on a monthly basis and now they will be doing this every two weeks.

Thank you for considering spending your vacation time at our cabin - it is a beautiful place in a beautiful spot."

They go above and beyond for their guests, and we look forward to this property continuing to host satisfied guests! Best, the Evolve Team

The cabin is perfect for families as right outside the back door is a very shallow entry into the lake. Our grandchildren ages 7, 5 and 1, all enjoyed playing in the water. The older two learned how to fish and both made a catch! The adults enjoyed kayaking on the serene and peaceful lake. The home is well equipped with everything from kitchen supplies to baby toys! Fun family vacation at tranquil Island Lake house

    Reviewed by: Pam F. on

Idyllic location on private, spring-fed, sandy-bottom Island Lake, close to Traverse City, Michigan. The roomy 4-bedroom cabin has nice furniture, updated kitchen & appliances, including a washer & dryer. While cabin is neat, it could use a little TLC—the interior & windows need a through cleaning. The multiple step ups & downs in living areas are trip hazards, especially to young kids, the back door/main access to lake only opens partially because it gets stuck on the floor. There aren’t enough towels & they are old & worn. There was no shovel or rake to clean the beach area. The house does not have central A/C, but owner did provide a new portable A/C unit & fans which helped keep main living area tolerable while temps were over 90. We stayed for a week & had good time. I give this property a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.

    Manager's Response:
Pamela, thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience. We're glad your family enjoyed their time overall, and we would like to provide some insight addressing your concerns. In regards to the towels, unfortunately, these are items that occasionally are removed from our place by previous guests. As soon as you passed that feedback along, the homeowner ordered additional towels, so thank you for bringing that to our attention. In this area, it is very unusual to have high temperatures that would challenge the comfort of a guest's stay. Northern Michigan, generally speaking, does not have anything close to extreme summer temperatures. We understand that you asked the homeowner to install multiple window air conditioning units prior to your arrival. The homeowner went to great lengths to purchase a new $500 free-standing air conditioning unit that sits on the floor for your stay as they go above and beyond for their guests. This is because the way the windows open, a window air conditioning unit wouldn't allow for one. It is common for classic cabins like this one in Northern Michigan to have elevation changes between rooms, and there are only two rooms in this property like this. The reason for this is that most original northern Michigan cabins have had additions added over the years which, due to building codes of the locale, often require this. This has never come up as an issue by any prior guests. The homeowner has 4 younger kids and none of them have experienced an issue with this. This cabin is their family cabin and the only property they rent. It is very well kept up and they care a great deal about keeping it that way. They truly prioritize the guest experience and make sure all guests have the best possible stay here. We are happy to have this property in our network of Traverse City properties. It is a beautiful classic, updated and well cared for cabin that provides our guests with an authentic Northern Michigan experience. Best, the Evolve Team

Great little cabin getaway nestled on the Little Traverse Lake!

This little cabin was centrally located to great little areas to visit....Glen Arbor, Empire, Leland, Suttons Bay, Traverse City, just to name a few. We visited the Sleeping Bear Dunes, hiked some small trails, hit a beach at Empire, dined in different little towns but loved coming back to our cozy cabin on the water for fire and hanging out. There is no AC but we didn't need it until the last night got a little stuffy. Definitely a total cabin vibe and with beauiful sunsets. The rooms are perfect. The 3rd and 4th bedrooms were a little inconvenient for adults since you had to pass through 3 to get to 4. Bunk Beds don't really work for some adult but that's our issue, not the cabin:). We would definitely go back. The owners were very responsive to some small needs and very hospitable. Thanks for the good times for our first time to Michigan.
