    Simply Unbelievable and Totally Unforgettable!

    Reviewed by: Dan K. on

We have stayed in a lot of amazing vacation rentals, but the Leaping Lizard Ranch one was BY FAR the most unique and extraordinary property we have ever seen! The house itself is a design wonder and unlike anything we have ever experienced. The well thought out design was not only comfortable and hospitable, but aesthetically pleasing and even educational. If you have never stayed in an Earthship before I highly recommend the experience. My wife and I loved learning about how the house was built and how it functions (there are several books in the property about Earthship design) and our children were endlessly fascinated by all of the different features and functions of the home. You would think that staying in an Earthship would be a rugged, "roughing it" experience, but this home also came with all of the modern conveniences and creature comforts that you would come to expect from any vacation home. The moat AMAZING feature of this property, however was just outside the back door. This home is located in a remote location high above Grand Junction directly on the lip of your own private canyon! The views of this canyon are simply BREATHTAKING and we spent most of our time simply gazing out over the beautiful expanse. This is truly a million dollar view with one of the most picturesque vistas I have ever seen. The views change throughout the course of the day and I honestly can't decide which view was more beautiful - dawn, midday, dusk or evening. We could have stayed at this property for another two weeks and it was an experience that my family will never forget. Most importantly, Didi and Rick were two of the most lovely and gracious hosts I have ever encountered. They greeted us upon our arrival, showed us the many unique features of the home and made sure that our every need was taken care of. They were always available when needed and they were a great resource for exploring the local attractions. Thank you so much, Didi and Rick for sharing your magical little piece of paradise with us all. It is one of our favorite vacation stays of all time and we plan to return again and again!

This unique house is naturally comfortable - it was fun to hear the story behind it. The big, south-facing windows and indoor garden make it feel light and airy. We spent lots of time enjoying the canyon view and watching birds come and go. At night, the stars are amazing! The only thing we would add is some curtains on the windows by the master bedroom.

This house is a completely back to nature experience. Be sure you know what that means before you rent. Once you turn off the paved road, it will take you 20 min to reach the property and the road is entirely gravel. You need a pickup SUV or 4 wheel to access it and there is no cell phone service on the route. There is nothing in the house for provisions not even cooking oil, shampoo. or salt and pepper so bring every item you will need. Because once you arrive it is very hard to leave. The house inside is very clean but be wary of bringing children. There are all kinds of mechanical equipment and sharp rusty surfaces outside the house in addition to a cliff. The view is nice of course and the property owner is a kind man, but he lives on the property in a large adjacent garage I think. Passive HVAC is basically no HVAC system. Water comes from a well so you are advised to use as little as possible. This is a true eco lodge but be sure that is the experience you want. It is entirely rustic. We lost 900 dollars and ruined a weekend for 7 people because this property was not well suited for us. Maybe talk to the host before renting.

    Manager's Response:
Hi Rhonda, We were sorry to hear that you decided not to complete your stay with us. We want each guest to find the perfect vacation rental for their needs, so we take the accuracy of our listings seriously - it's one of our 4 Core Property Standards! Travelers can see before they book that this is a secluded, cliffside property, and we clearly describe this eco-friendly house as perfect for an off-the-grid retreat. While there is a county-maintained gravel road leading to the house, guests do not need a particular vehicle or 4-wheel to easily make their way to the property. We'd also like to clarify that the homeowners do provide complimentary toiletries as well as pantry items like spices, cooking oil, and tea and coffee, which they let you know when you spoke the day before your arrival. While this may not be the luxury home that you were looking for, the owners strive to provide truly 5-star experiences at this beautiful and unique vacation retreat, and we are looking forward to helping them continue to do so! Best, the Evolve Team

    Canyon coolness

Me and my boys had an excellent time at the Earth Ship. With temperatures down in Grand Junction at 99 degrees, this house in the high plateau above was cool and comfortable. View was spectacular and the home open and inviting for relaxing. Our hosts were great and we had an excellent time. Check out Bangs Canyon for a nearby hidden gem of a trailhead.

We were looking for a back-to-nature get away where we could tune out and relax, and the earthship looked perfect for the task. From the moment we walked in (at a very late hour) we were warmly welcomed by the hosts, and the house immediately felt like home. Each day we were torn between just wanting to be at the house looking out the windows with our jaws on the floor, while also wanting to seek out the many nearby trails that wanted exploring. This home will capture your heart, ease your stress and lull you into the best sleeps you've ever experienced. We loved every minute and can't wait to go back!

Our family of 5 stayed here from July 7th to 11th. We had an amazing stay in this unique home and Rick and Didi are very kind and friendly people. The lizards that ran around the back of the house were fun for our youngest daughter who loved to try to catch them. Didi has an extensive book collection in the house which she let our oldest daughter read from and look through. My husband and son loved riding their bikes in the surrounding area. The views were incredible and it was definitely worth staying here! We call it the "Lizard House" from now on! Thank you, Rick and Didi!

Wonderful library of books to browse through! Truly incredible views - so quiet and relaxing. The only neighbors we heard or saw were the ravens and the coyotes!

    Unique, beautiful & comfortable Earthship

    Reviewed by: Kate C. on

Our 4 nights at the Earthship were great! The house is innovative and really beautiful. On the inside, it's colorful and comfy. The indoor garden is fed by a grey water system and there's a compost toilet (cool!); less adventurous travelers shouldn't fear though as there's a 'normal' toilet, shower, etc. The view of the canyon is stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor deck. The owners Rich and Didi also live on the property, next door, and are friendly and wonderfully helpful. Travelers with kids might want to know that the tub isn't in operation and only one of the bedrooms has a door.

    Fun Rental & Unbeatable Views!

    Reviewed by: ValerieD on

This house might not be for everyone - you have to appreciate the remoteness of the location (and factor that extra drive time into your daily plans / sightseeing) but we loved it. The house itself was nicely appointed (maybe a toaster and coffee maker would have been helpful, but we survived without) and very comfortable for our stay. The views are incredible. Inside the house, outside the house, you can't get enough of the gorgeous red rock mixed with evergreens. Just breathtaking. The house was kid-friendly for our five and two year old boys. We had access to a pack n' play which was really helpful and appreciated. Young kids definitely must be supervised outdoors due to the cliff edge, but with 35 acres to roam there's plenty of exploring to do. Rick and DiDi were incredibly nice hosts. They checked us in and out and spent time getting to know us and our kids. Great people! I would definitely recommend this rental if you're looking for something a little different, off the beaten path, and in a gorgeous location. So glad we stayed here!
