Most was as advertised. Many of the lights were burned out. Could have better labeling of what switch operates which light, it was a guessing game. There were six of us and the 2 baths were an issue once or twice since the one bath is in the Mbrm. Also, for what the charge is I would expect some necessities like soap and shampoo in the showers. (I know it said it was not provided in description) it doesn't cost the owner much but not having it creates a hassle for the traveler. Great location to the park and labor day balloon festival. Overall, was okay.

Not As Pictured/Sketchy Neighborhood/Big disappointment for our Family Vacation

    Reviewed by: Regina G. on

    Comment:

We had 7 adults and 6 kids. POSITIVE: clean, plenty of towels, great kitchen. NEGATIVES: Parking - only curb/street parking in front of house (3 cars max). You must park close to the curb. The easement between the street & house is filled with large stones which are difficult (if not impossible) to walk on, with only one small path w/stepping stones. This makes for VERY difficult loading/unloading of luggage & people. We had a couple of close calls with small kids and older adults. Passenger doors get stuck on the curb when opened. YARD: the yard with the swing set is NOT as pictured in the photos online. It appeared to be a nice private backyard where the kids would be safe to play while we cooked, HOWEVER, (1) this yard is shared with a long-term renter who has a large dog that freely roams around. The kids were scared to go out when the dog was roaming (which was a lot). (2) this yard is on the corner of two pretty busy streets and only has a short chain-link fence. The neighborhood is NOT a safe area - there are people (looked to be drunk/on drugs/homeless) walking through at all hours looking in the cars parked on the streets. Our son-in-laws are runners and they would not even go out for their morning runs in the neighborhood. (3) Another rental in back with a man that "watched us" as we took out the garbage. EXTERIOR: the listing boasted a front porch with rocking chairs where you can enjoy morning coffee. It did not mention the rotting porch the rockers sit on. I took several pictures of the rotting handrails and porch areas near the banister. Not safe. Not enjoyable. INTERIOR: BR #1 on main floor directly adjacent to the dining room/kitchen. Second floor has 2 "bedrooms". One is a converted/enclosed porch with windows all around which is extremely HOT. A portable free-standing A/C was provided in the room, but did not cool (only operated as a fan). Master BR is nice & spacious with lg closet, but the light in the closet did not work. We had to open the curtains to see in the room due to the poor lighting. There are outdated heavy velvet curtains hanging on cheap rods, which were giving way under the weight of the curtains. The TOILET SITS in the corner of the MBR with no wall or privacy provided! There are only TWO toilets in the entire house, so you have to leave the MBR to give bathroom access at times. We were so disappointed with the neighborhood, safety of the area, and lack of a safe yard for the kids to play in. NOT GOOD!

    Manager's Response:
Regina, thank you for your review. This homeowner has asked us to pass along the following response:

"We are so sorry that you were disappointed with our home in downtown Colorado Springs. First, I'm glad that it was clean and the kitchen met your needs. Our listing does not advertise private parking, and the street parking is open to the public. It is possible to park on all of the streets on all blocks surrounding the home. The stones are pictured in the first photo of the listing. I'm sorry that you felt that the photos are not representative of the property. We will make a note to our listing that explicitly says that the playground is in the shared yard. As you mentioned, the yard is shared with a long-term renter who is mentioned in our listing. We did not know that her dog was roaming around, and we have addressed this with the tenant to ensure it does not happen anymore.

As for car doors getting stuck on the curb, the city of Colorado Springs has high curbs in our downtown neighborhood. This has been a frustration for me as well and unfortunately, is not avoidable in this area of town. The property is located on two of downtown's lower-traffic
streets. Since we are so close to downtown, there is naturally more traffic than a suburban neighborhood. I'm sorry that you felt that a man was watching you take out your garbage. I am not able to control the looks of other people as you go about your daily business.

We have just replaced all the rocking chairs and repaired all the balusters outside, so guests can enjoy the wonderful porch we have.

We do our best to communicate the interior set up, and yes there are only two bathrooms as advertised in the listing. There should have been a folding privacy door provided for this bathroom. If there was not, I'll have to address that with our maintenance staff. I'm sorry that the bedroom on the second floor was hot. There are not any AC vents in that room, which is why the fan is provided. Many 140-year-old homes in the area do not have AC, but our home is lucky enough to have one. Since the home is so old, it does not cool evenly and we have done our best to explain this in our listing to reflect the property accurately.

You did bring several items to our attention. I didn't know that the light in the closet doesn't work and I also didn't know that the curtain rod was giving way. I will ask our maintenance staff to address these issues immediately. Also, there are many sets of lights in this room, so if you
could clarify your comment about the lighting, I would really appreciate it. Many of the sets of lights are on dimmers so I'm wondering if they were not brightened to their full effect. The velvet curtains are my personal choice, so I'm sorry that you found them to be outdated - they are as pictured in the photos.

Many of our guests are pleased with the atmosphere of downtown Colorado Springs and the amenities that it offers. We are proud to offer a place where families can stay in comfort for a pleasant visit at a very affordable rate. For your next visit, I suggest looking into the Antler's Hilton where valet parking and elevators are readily available for your family's convenience. Thanks!"

Location was great. Centrally located to Garden of the Gods, Manitou Cave Dwellings, Pikes Peak, and the zoo. Layout of the house is a little weird because of how old it is, but it worked for our 9 guests. The only thing that really needs to be changed is adding blinds or darker curtains. While the natural light is great, it stays light until 9pm this time of year and starts getting light again at 4:30-5. Made for hard for the little ones to go to bed. The house is huge, the kitchen is great and it worked well for entertaining.

Thanks for taking the time to leave this review, Lucas! We're glad to hear that overall this home met your needs and provided an enjoyable stay for you and your family. We appreciate your feedback on areas of opportunity and have shared it with the homeowners. No blinds on windows to keep the bright morning sun out. The porch bedroom had no air conditioner. The master bathroom was spacious but awkward for other house members to use. Overall we enjoyed our stay but a few changes could have made it a five star rating
*This review was originally posted on HomeAway for a stay in August 2018

    Manager's Response:
Carol, thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. We're glad certain areas of the house were a great fit for your family, but are sorry certain aspects weren't what you expected. Our listings are carefully built to reflect our properties in an accurate light. This is an older house and we do not mention that the rooms have blinds as the house gets a lot of natural light. We do our best to describe the unique layout with an open bathroom in the master bedroom. In regards to the air conditioning, there is a window A/C unit on the third floor, and there are fans provided in the rest of the bedrooms, however there are no vents in the wrap around porch room. The homeowners appreciate your insight and will consider adding darker window coverings, but there are so many windows in that beautiful house that it is difficult to make it dark. Thank you again! Our favorite features of the home were the amazing kitchen/dining room and the outdoor space. The only drawback to the home is that it only has two bathrooms and one of them is in the master bedroom. We knew that there was only two bathrooms when we booked the home, but the bathroom being in the bedroom (as in not walled off in any way- including the toilet) was a bit of a shock and took some adjusting.
