Poor lighting system, super dark place, the kitchen light takes a lot of time to turn on. No water to drink, no shampoo and conditioning. It was some coffee, but 1 cream and 1 sugar I was staying for 3 days... I have been at cheapest places and they provided better service, I guess I have to chose better next time I go to Galveston :(

    Manager's Response:
Yolimar, we're sorry to hear that your stay fell flat of your expectations. The homeowners would like to pass along the following message:

"We're sorry to learn of your disappointment with the Bishop’s Bungalow. It is an old historic home, and it does have its quirks. As for the kitchen light, we appreciate when our guests let us know something is not working or in need of repair, which is the case with the kitchen light ballast. In the future, we hope you let us know while you are in residence so we can quickly address it for your immediate comfort.

We provide essential items such as coffee, shampoo, and soap, etc., for the first night of our guests stay. However, we've found that most guests tend to bring their own specialty items as they're aware Bishop’s Bungalow is more laid back rather than resort-style. Again, if there was something you needed, we wish you would have contacted us so that we could have assisted you. We live next door, and our telephone numbers are on the information sheet in the units.

We believe that we provide accommodations in Galveston at a very reasonable and economical price. Again, we are sorry you were unhappy but do hope you will give us another chance!"

We enjoyed the property. It is roomy and well appointed. I would suggest addition of a colander for preparation of pasta and a couple of more washcloths (there was only one). I will be deterred by the high (non-refundable) damage protection charge. I think it is unfair to retain those funds if the property is left undamaged.

A few issues and needs updated but worked for us

    Reviewed by: Brenda D. on

    Comment:

Booked this location based on previous reviews and the description of the property, but we were overall disappointed. Was easy to find, right off Broadway (a very busy street) and central to the beach and The Strand, although walking was too far for us either way. Beach items noted to be onsite were not present, umbrella was broken and the no beach chairs. The cooler provided was foam and would have been hard to carry to the beach let alone withstand the wind you find there. Very outdated in furnishings and appearance, needs numerous repairs, both inside and out. Street noise is very loud at night and we had to sleep with the bedroom door closed. It had dishes and pots and pans, stove and fridge, microwave and coffee maker, the basics. There is a washer/dryer combo on site, but the washer drained on the floor and wet the carpet in the back room and the iron didn't hold water, just pours out the bottom. Had ample towels and bedding. We weren't there much in the 6 days during our visit, mostly overnight so it worked but really was expecting something better. It is a historic building and Im sure has stories but nothing posted on the property. The porch is nice to sit out and watch the cars go by, but the road noise gets too bad after morning. We didn't contact the owners while there as we felt what we had was sufficient. Other guests checked in later in the week, but you don't see much of them as everyone is out and about. I would love to see a property such as this updated and in good repair, really has potential.

Manager's Response: Hi Brenda, We are sorry to hear that your stay at the property was disappointing! The home is located in the Historic East End of Galveston and some street noise is to be expected, but we are sorry that it impacted your stay. The homeowner lets guests know before their check-in that while the Bungalow is stocked with everything they need at the unit, beach items are not provided. In the future, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, no matter how small! The owners would have been able to assist you with the washer and are always willing to do everything possible to ensure that their guests have a comfortable stay. Thank you for your thoughtful review, and we hope that you keep us in mind with for your future travels! Best, the Evolve Team

The back door couldn't be properly locked. The dryer scorched our clothing. There were lots of knives, forks, spoons, the cutting knives were not sharp enough to cut up food. Was able to cook breakfast, I didn't have enough pots and pans to cook dinner. Cockroaches 1 1/2 inches long running around, bugs and fleas all over the place. Hot water is a joke toilet was too close to the wall facing you and the paper was unable to access with out standing up!
*This review was originally posted on HomeAway for a stay in March 2018

Manager's Response: Hello, We are very sorry to hear of the difficulties you experienced during your stay! Due to the tropical climate some critters are to be expected, so the homeowners regularly treat the unit for pests as well as advise guests against leaving windows and doors open for extended periods of time. We do wish that you had reached out about the dryer and kitchenware during your stay - you guest contact would have been happy to assist you while you were still at the property! Now that they have received your feedback they will ensure that any issues are resolved for future guests. Thank you for letting us know about your stay, and we hope that we can travel with you again soon! Best, the Evolve Team

Cozy bungalow right off the main street that eventually forms from I-45. Talk about easy to find. And it's close to everything. You can hear the ocean from a few blocks away, or one can quickly head down to The Strand. Beautiful buildings right across the street, too. This place is over 100 years old and has charm. The bed was very comfortable. Increase the size of the TV and I'd give it another star!

House is quirky, clean and tidy, but old, so dont expect modern and shiny. It's in a great position for all the touristy stuff, and def walkable to lots of great places, but is noisy as it's on a busy road junction, plus there is a large dog nearby who woke us every morning. On the whole a good place to stay, but perhaps not if you like a lie-in. Easy to park outside.
