My husband and I stayed here for two weeks. The king-size bed was very comfortable, and we appreciated the toiletries, which included shampoo and body wash. My daughter was there for the first week and slept on the pull out twin bed, which she found comfortable. You access this home from the Hawaii Belt Road, which makes it a good location for exploring the island. Being ten minutes from Costco and the airport was very handy.

Donna's hospitality and providing helpful advice on where to go was much appreciated. She was responsive to any questions or concerns we had. Thank you for the fresh picked papayas, lemons, avocado and bananas which were grown on your property. It was a lovely surprise to arrive to fresh fruit and a bottle of wine...thank you!!!
We enjoyed our stay on the Big Island, and having this home as our home away from home!

We really enjoyed our four-night stay in this house. Both living room and bedroom are large comparing to two Airbnb places where we stayed in Volcano and Hilo during this trip. There are plenty of towels to use. There are a lot of ingredients in the kitchen. It is 10 minutes from Safeway, Costco, Target, Walmart and many restaurants. When the weather is good, we can see sunset on the ocean from the house. The house owner also provided a lot of information about the big island. The house is very quiet during nights although it is very close to highway 190.

    A few minuses

    Reviewed by: Irina S. on

    Comment:

When we booked, the reviews looked good and it sounded like a great place to stay. Donna was nice when we met her on the first day, provided us with beach chairs and towels for which we are grateful. As well as the sample of local bananas was very tasty and kids really enjoyed those.

Once we arrived though, we found a few things that did not work for us. The unit was not very clean. Hair in the bathroom, crumbs on the kitchen counter. Dishes and pans and cups all needed to be washed before using them - were quite dirty. Took out one of the cutting boards and it was covered in dark dust, etc. Blankets had dirty spots on them.

The noise level in the evenings and mornings was quite a bit as owners live upstairs and were constantly moving furniture, walking heavy as well. So if you are a light sleeper, stay somewhere else.

They have pets on property and our son is allergic to cats and dogs. If you are prone to allergies, again, stay somewhere else. As much as Max and Samson were cute, it was a nuisance to eat outside. Samson, the cat, would jump on table or claw you asking for food. Max, the dog, will be there begging for food as well. So on some days we just ate inside to avoid that.

For us, minuses over-weighted the pluses of this property and we will not stay there again.

    Manager's Response:
Irina, thank you for your review and we're sorry to hear that some aspects of your stay fell short of your expectations. The homeowner, Donna, was out of town for the holidays and returned just prior to your check-in time. There was a check-out that morning, so she asked her daughter to clean the unit and change the bed, since she was returning late. Usually, Donna or her cleaning crew cleans the unit, and they have never had any negative feedback regarding cleanliness in the past. We apologize for this one-off situation, and we are confident it will not happen again for future guests. Since your stay, Donna has replaced all the dishes and pot and pans in the kitchen. She has also upgraded the bedroom furniture to include a King bed rather than a Queen, with matching nightstands, headboard, and dressers. Regarding the owner's dog, she has set his wireless shock collar so he cannot go downstairs to disrupt any of the guests. His boundaries will not include the downstairs in the future, and we are confident this will correct the issue. As evident by past reviews, this homeowner is known for their 5-star service and strives to provide all guests with the perfect experience. We look forward to helping them continue to host many satisfied travelers in the future. Thank you again for your feedback! Best, the Evolve Team

The home was very spacious with gorgeous area around and so kids had a great time. There was just one time when we woke up early morning due to footsteps above. And, it has a comfortable country feel rather modern, but the kitchen, bathroom, all are very well equipped. Overall good stay for us!

? When my husband and I decided to reserve the Kalaoa Hideaway for our 2nd half of our trip on the Big Island, we weren't sure what to expect. Much to our surprise, Donna and Jeff are superb hosts who immediately made you feel like family! Just as we settled in, Donna was there to greet us with her Aloha spirit. She provided us with fresh fruits from her garden, a fresh egg from her hens and filtered water. It is a very spacious unit with a comfortable King size bed. Beach gear is readily available for your use and bring to any of beautiful beaches (Hapuna was our favorite) and Donna even loaned us some snorkel gear (although we didn't get a chance to use it). There is lots of space to move around and the cabinets are fully stocked with just about everything you need if you plan to cook a lot. The temperature is tolerable since you are situated higher up the hill and the view from the terrace provides you with beautiful sunset views. If you are missing something, you are only minutes down the hill from Costco, Walmart, Target, Safeway and more...don't hesitate one more minute to reserve this place. Donna and Jeff provide great suggestions on what to do in and around the west side of the island. We truly felt safe staying there and want to keep this place a secret only so we can come back again and again! Donna managed to convince me to attend one of her Zumba classes, even with my two left feet. It was so much fun! Super busy with dressmaking/quilting projects, Donna carved out some time to custom fit an aloha shirt for my husband in the amount of time we left and came back from sightseeing. It's beautiful and she has so many fabrics to choose from. I love my yoga bag! I was so lucky to be able to shop in person from her Etsy store (Originals by Hitomi) . I just love her quilts and children's clothing! Jeff is so passionate about his hometown and his drive to "take back his beaches" Kudos for making the front page of the local newspaper! Keep up the great work! If we only had more time, I?m sure my husband would?ve managed to convince him out on a fishing trip. :) We already miss this hideaway and all the lovely pets that greet you everyday. Braddah (cat) is our favorite because he just wants to greet you with head butts, sit on your lap and lick you all over the place. We miss him, the Fears and this place already. Until next time...Mahalo!

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful and the true essence of Aloha! This 1 BR Kalaoa Hideaway is set in an ideal location for enjoying the sites, sounds, scents and beauty of island living with plenty of space on the property to enjoy a quiet adventure while being close to everything one would need. The serene setting Donna and Jeff have created is truly enchanting and inviting. The fruit trees on the property were in season (winter fruits-mostly citrus) and plentiful. Donna's orchids are absolutely gorgeous, as well as the other tropical flowers; plumeria, anthuriums and bird of paradise to name a few. This location is ideal. Elevation is about 1700 ft making the temperature excellent for sleeping (not too hot or humid) with warm breezes, a spectacular ocean view and unforgettable sunsets. Access to the beaches, the airport, downtown Kona and even Costco is simple and easy while staying at this tropical paradise. Donna and Jeff were GREAT... always thoughtful, friendly, kind and very helpful. Donna is an amazing quilter which added much to my overall experience. It is always nice to meet and share life stories with people when sharing their home area and Donna and Jeff were very welcoming. I would highly recommend this property and would like to return here every time I visit the Big Island. After enduring a brutal winter in Boston in 2014/15 (9 feet of snow!), we decided to leave New England this winter to enjoy warm, sunny days on the Big Island. We stayed at this property for three months (December to March), two months in the one-bedroom apartment and one month in the two-bedroom house. This is an excellent location, with quick access to Route 190 for exploring areas North and Route 11 for exploring areas South. The property is only minutes from downtown Kona, beaches, stores, and restaurants, as well as the sites tourists normally plan to visit. Donna and Jeff were always friendly, pleasant and helpful during our stay. Jeff and his son Michael are excellent fishing companions, who share their vast knowledge of ocean fishing. Donna works at home sewing and quilting (she made the beautiful bedspreads in the units), but she is available if needed. Raising orchids is her hobby, and her beautiful orchids are displayed throughout the property. I enjoyed accompanying Donna to her orchid club meetings, which were interesting and informative. We also enjoyed Paige’s company (the long-term tenant who resides in the other apartment). She was friendly and helpful. You will particularly enjoy visiting Hapuna Beach (our favorite), TJ’s Ribs (Ali’i Marketplace), Sam Choy’s Restaurant, and Happy Hour at Ray’s on the Bay (Sheraton Hotel). We found that the best places for buying gifts are the monthly Village Strolls in Kona and the Wednesday market at the Sheraton Hotel. This property is exactly as described in the listing, and we fully concur with Betty and Dennis Heltibridle’s comments below. We highly recommend this property and hope to return soon. Aloha!

Donna and Jeff have created a retreat filled with “aloha” spirit and perfectly located for easy access to the beach , convenient shopping, leisurely trips to Kailua-Kona and the Kohala coast, and quick access to Route 190 for exploring points North and South on the island. We loved Pine Trees Beach for its natural setting, proximity, surfing, sunset views while BBQing on the lanai, and wonderful beach combing with breaching whales just off shore. As you will quickly learn, this is a very talented, ambitious family and most willing to share their possessions and experiences to enhance your stay. Recreational and leisure equipment is available for the asking, and Jeff can provide an unforgettable day of reef or off-shore fishing. Keep in mind Jeff was a commercial fisherman and has the boat, equipment, and knowledge for safe, convenient trips to world class fishing. The Fear ‘ohana is very private, but you can be in downtown Kona in minutes for an evening filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of exotic Hawaii. Donna will keep you advised of all “special” island events and will personally invite and escort you on her excursions. Be prepared to be treated as family and absorb the experiences and “aloha” of this native, Hawaiian family. I especially enjoyed my mornings with Donna as she lovingly attends her orchids and shares her knowledge of gardening and her Hawaiian life style. The property is accurately described, and all details will be well defined before your visit. Donna works from home and is readily available (shares her lilikoi jelly and ice cream!!), and Jeff will be a “first responder” should the need arise. This place and these people deserve a double entry on our “bucket list”!

    Roomy basement apartment
Good price, good location, nice owner.
Parking was adequate for one car.
Significant noise transmission from owner's unit upstairs.
Kitchen adequate with stove, oven, fridge with icemaker, microwave (marginal), coffee maker, no dishwasher.
    Minimal water pressure in shower.
Motion-activated light outside of bedroom window triggered by animals in the night.
Owner has quite a few friendly dogs and cats.
At least one cat fight per night.
Roosters in neighborhood began crowing at 4:15 am.
Water heater is on a timer. Be sure to ask location so you can turn it on if you want to shower in the afternoon after coming back from the beach.

Not having A/C generally wouldn't be a problem because of the location upland on the Big Island. At that elevation, it’s cool enough to sleep with the windows open. However, it’s hard to recommend this apartment for another light sleeper. Between the motion-activated light, the cat fights, and the roosters crowing, a light sleeper just barely has a chance to get any sleep.
