    Perfect stay in Kalapana

    Reviewed by: Fanny M. on

This house is wonderful! Thanks to Michael and his family! My father, myself and our son (3 y/o) had a terrific stay in Kalapana. It was wonderful to fall asleep to the sound of the frogs and the birds. We felt right in the middle of the rain forest. The house is very well equiped, comfortable, and close to diiferent Big Island attractions. During our stay, we enjoyed the National volcanoes park, the hot springs, the Hilo zoo and beaches, and a visit to green and black sands beach. Micheal and his family were very welcoming and helpful. We missed our little piece of paradise as soon as we left it. We will come back without hesitation!

Nice place and great location for visitng the lava flow

    Reviewed by: Dorothea R. on

The place is about 15min away from Pahoa. The apartment has no windows in the living room so when we arrived there was a storm and wind and got us worried how we would sleep. But there was windows and shades in the bedroom and by the other bed so it was all goodf . The place is very spacious clean well stocked. It takes some getting used to sleeping with a tree frogs concert. Michael and Duane were super nice and helped a lot with getting around. Do not recommend to go hike to the lava-its a long walk trough rocks and you might end up not seeing anything-go see the lava glow at night or do helicopter ride with Safari helicopters.

nice clean apartment close to volcanoes

If you want to be close to the volcanoes then this is a good choice of accommodations. It is a very unique apartment on the top floor of a private home. Screened in rooms. A bit of a drive each day though to get to Hilo. Hilo is definitely the rainy side of the island. The Kona side is sunny.

    Charmed by the hospitality!

We took a little bit of a risk spending the majority of our vacation to Hawaii in Pahoa, as it?s not exactly known for touristy stuff and beaches, but we were completely pleasantly surprised with how much area has to offer, and our wonderful hosts were so kind and inviting, offering tips of interesting places to visit and in general making us feel very welcome! I highly recommend this vacation rental! There is only one thing that I would change if we could do it all over again, it would be nice if the two beds were both queen size. They are full-size, and it?s just not quite big enough to be completely comfortable for two grown adults. But other than that we had a completely wonderful stay!

We had a really nice stay at this place. Location was a bit more off than we thought (further away from Hilo than expected) but we ended up having a lot of fun going to Uncle Robert's at night. And being so close to the volcano and having to drive only 10 minutes to go see the lava was a big plus. The space is big and really well decorated.

Minutes away from Volcanoes National Park where we were able to go hiking and see a boat load of lava so close you cannot believe it! It was an incredible experience. Would definitely go back to this beautiful home.

If you are looking for true Hawai'i, this is it. From the fruit trees in the back yard, the incredibly friendly hosts downstairs to the wildlife that surrounds the area, this is a true gem. Walking distance to what has to be hands down the most authentic Hawaiian gathering on the Island every Wednesday. 5 minutes from the end of road where you can rent a bike or hike to active flowing lava. A stunning 15 minute drive to the Kapaho tide pools. I can't say enough good about this place. It's very clean, very well stocked and has a great shower! The BBQ area in the back with the TV, bar and stools and swimming pool is perfect for winding down. Thank you for sharing your beautiful paradise with us!

Excellent location to explore the Kalapana lava fields, Volcanoes Nat'l Park, eat in Pahoa, snorkel in Kapoho Tidepools and a short drive to Hilo and all the waterfalls. Quiet, quaint little area. The unit is HUGE and beautiful with cedar beam construction, lots of wI'dows (with screens). Comfortably could accommodate 4 although it was just my husband and I. Michael was full of good suggestions, particularly go to Uncle's on Wed night for the farmer's market, food, fun and music.

We loved this place! There is no windows, only screens, so you can ear the fauna sounds, so relaxing! It's very close to the end of the road, near Kalapana. It's the perfect place to explore the south of big island, including the lava flow. We also really liked being close to the Kapoho tide pools, excellent snorkeling!! The house had all we needed for cooking dinner (there isn't much restaurants nearby). We would defenitely stay there again, if looking for a place to explore that part of the island! Thanks!

If you are looking for a remote island location, this is it. It's surrounded by a tropical jungle, so the nighttime noises are fun--relax to the music of a mixture of tree frogs and insects. We ended up driving all over the island, so we were gone most days and returned late in the evening to clean, comfortable beds. It is a 30 minute drive to Hilo and over 2 hour drive to Kona. Just be aware of the extra drive time. The hosts live downstairs and they were very kind and accommodating. They even had a cooler and some snorkeling gear we could use for the week, which was very handy. We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook meals, and plenty of clean towels and linens. It was a very lovely place and we enjoyed our time there.

    Great Getaway

If you want to see the lava flow at Kamokuna, this is the place to be. I picked this wonderful vacation home because I wanted to be as close to the lava as possible. I hiked out every night and same evenings to the ocean entry and loved how conveniently close it was to the viewing area. I also liked to be only a few miles away to some of my favorite snorkeling spots down in Lower Puna. The house is wonderful, well equipped and offered everything for my needs. Even though I spent most of my time out taking pictures somewhere, I really liked all the amenities this place had to offer. It's a short walk to the store or to the Wednesday evening market with live music and awesome food. The landlord was awesome and will help point out highlights if you're not familiar with the area. If I plan another lava photography trip, I would definitely stay here again Reviewer location St. George, UT *Originally posted on Homeaway/VRBO for a stay in December 2016

    Lava lava...

    Reviewed by: shep on

One goes to Pahoa to see the lava, not the beach (none) or snorkeling ( drive 20+ min) or the usual tourist activities or restaurants etc. The house is shared, expect noise, music, cig smoke, dogs. (hence 4 stars) It is in the true jungle, expect bugs, ants, awesome noisy frogs and critters. Wonderful top floor, great breezes, huge space, big stocked kitchen. Older house, very 70s, all wood, very retro. If you are going for lava viewing by land or sea perfect location. If expecting a hotel like setting not for you. Good older kid pool, but not private as house is shared. Could host large family(s) or 2 couples easily, very large space. Excellent value. Friendly helpful host. Open stairs.

So we booked this lovely place for the weekend. The place was really clean and spacious. My kids loved the fax that they could wake up and go straight in the pool. My husband and I love the fact that there was a store no more than a 1/2 mile down the road and we were able to get stuff to make breakfast easily. We enjoyed the meeting locals, the short walk to the beach, the fully stocked store that is just a half mile down the road - should you need to pick up an item or grab one of their made to order sandwiches. We were lucky to be there on a Wednesday and got to experience the open market that takes over the End of the Road. There was live music, lovely people and great food.
