Fern Cottage was lovely! It was extremely clean and well maintained. It had a private gate entry with the property owners close by. The cottage had everything we needed (and more!). The only downside was there was no washer/dryer - but we knew that when we booked the cottage for our trip. The location is perfect if you're planning to visit Volcano State Park and do some hiking (it was only an 8 minute drive!). There are some local restaurants nearby as well, we recommend the Ohelo Cafe - excellent pizza!

Fern Cottage was comfortable, clean and very conveniently located to Volcano National Park and Hilo (30 minute drive). We appreciated the attention to detail that was put in before we arrived including fresh cut flowers and macadamia nuts. The cool evening breezes were welcome respite after a day of hiking or touring Hilo. Rolland da Rooster did greet the morning every day and if you are a light sleeper this may be something to consider. By the end of our stay we were proud to count Rolland as one of our friends!

Comfortable, nicely furnished, and Carter and Elaine are gracious and helpful. Roland da rooster will escort you around the property and get you up for sunrise viewing of the lava. If you're a coffee lover, bring your own brewing system. There's just a little Keurig. I'd stay here again if we get back to Volcano.

This cozy, secure, spotless and tastefully decorated, island-themed cabin was the perfect base camp for our Volcanoes Park experience. Elaine and Carter gave us a warm welcome and got us settled in on the night we arrived. After that, it was a private, clean, comfortable, relaxing stay in a beautiful tropical rain forest setting. There is a well-thought out binder with additional info for the cabin that is a must read to make your stay even more enjoyable. It's really as lovely as the photos but what the photos don't capture is the ambiance of the property. Amazing hosts, fresh flowers, complimentary water and coffee put this over the top to a 5+ star rating!

Fern Cottage is gorgeous and beautifully furnished. We felt like we were stepping into a spa! Accoutrements such as fresh flowers, lotions, coffee and slippers were left out for us. The hosts greeted us on arrival and were so pleasant and helpful. The grounds are so peaceful. I enjoyed having coffee and wine out on the lanai. We were close to Volcanoes National park. I would recommend touring the park, doing a Lava Boat Tour, seeing the tidal pools, the Black Beach at Punalu'u. We had a great time; this place is a gem!

The BEST Lodging When Visiting Kilauea and Volcano

    Reviewed by: JT T. on

    Comment:

My husband and petite twenty-something year-old daughter and I absolutely loved the Fern Cottage. The hosts are very friendly, kind and most helpful. The large room is very well-appointed, comfortable and immaculately clean. The full kitchen was delightful for us to cook together. The table comfortably seats four people. And, the Fern Cottage is a terrific basecamp for cyclists to explore Volcano and surrounding areas. After cycling beginning near 3,000feet altitude at the Cottage, the extra large shower was luxurious. We thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and ease of the thoughtfully designed Fern Cottage. Our next trip to the Island of Hawai'i will no doubt include another stay at the Fern Cottage. Also, although there is easy parking, a ramp to the front door, and single-floor set-up, the bathroom door might be a little narrow for a wheelchair accessibility. This detail should be further discussed, if needed. Reviewer location Redmond, WA
