There is a formal dining room as well as an informal dining room in the kitchen and attached entertainment area including a large chopping block with bar stools. During the warmer months, you'll love lounging in the screened pool house adjacent to the L-shaped in-ground pool.

Facilities were clean, supplies of almost anything we needed was readily available. Everyone enjoyed the large pool with screened in porch.

The owners were available, cordial, and very accommodating!

    I wished I had booked 2 weeks!

    Pros and Cons

    Reviewed by: Trulee S. on

My family and I checked in to The Barn of Gray Mare Hill mid-July 2019. There were pros and cons to the Gray Mare Barn. Pros: The owners were attentive: Upon entering the house the owner, Mary Beth, was there to greet everyone and give a tour. When one of the guests had too many beauty tools plugged in, the electricity went out on the 2nd floor. Mary Beth?s husband came right over and fixed the circuit breaker. Historical: The house is a renovated barn over 100 years old! Everywhere I went there were pictures, displays, documents, and books. My favorite display is of Captain Margaret J. Skelly, 1942. There was a chair with her uniform jacket and medals, pictures, Army certificate, and the story behind her importance and connection to Gray Mare Hill. Cleanliness (sort of): Bed linens, rooms, towels (bath and pool) were clean. There were plenty of towels and dishware. The pool was clean as well. Roominess: There was plenty of room for 13 guests to sleep in beds. No one had to sleep on an air mattress or floor. Note: There were 5 couples and 3 single sleepers. Cons: Misleading: The house is listed as having AC. This needs to be changed to AC window units in bedrooms only (not central). The main common room, kitchen, formal dining room, 1st floor bedroom, and library do not have AC. My mom stayed on the first floor with only a fan and my dad, who needs AC due to health, had to stay on the 2nd floor. My niece and his girlfriend volunteered to stay in the 2nd floor library with fans. While most of us tried to make the best of the situation, it was hot unless we stayed in our respective rooms, which meant less time spent with family. It should also be noted that there are 3 floors and many stairs for those who may be less abled, and the first floor area my mom stayed in is really a sitting room with a rather uncomfortable sofa bed. Cleanliness: In contrast to the above, the baseboards and ceiling/corners need to be dusted. This is a historical house and we understand not every item can be dusted but corners, baseboards, and fans should be. Pool: There is poison ivy that runs along most of the pool fence and needs to be removed immediately. Poorly lit/ labeled: It was very dim in the house. Replace light bulbs with brighter ones. Also, the kitchen table by the island is sunken in the middle and not level. It would also be nice if there were more clearly marked labels on drawers, cupboards, etc for what is inside the kitchen/dining area.

Recently stayed at the Gray Mare Barn in Brooklyn Ct for a family gathering. The barns filled with history and was plenty of room of the 16 people who stayed. The bedrooms were comfortable and everyone felt right at home. Even though it was not pool weather we has plenty of room outside for the kids to play and the adults to sit and enjoy the outside. Mary Beth could not have been a more perfect host. Sh was available for any questions we had, provided with lots of history and went above and beyond in making our stay memorable. Would definitely recommend and would stay there again. Thanks MB!*This review was originally posted on HomeAway for a stay in March 2019

    Perfect for Our Family Reunion

    Reviewed by: Amy B. on

The house was big and comfortable, with lots of spaces for gathering as well as for quiet solitude. It was ideal for our family reunion. We were there during a spell of hot weather and spent a lot of time in the clean and roomy pool. MaryBeth was a fantastic hostess, available but not intrusive, and always attentive to our needs. Everything from towels and linens to toothpaste and shampoo was provided. The only issue we had was some difficulty getting answers to our questions about room layout, bed arrangements, etc., when we were first looking at it as a prospective location. We weren't able to directly contact the on-site owners until 15 days prior to the visit. (My impression was that this was due to the rental agent's policies.) We were very happy with our actual stay though and would definitely recommend this rental to others. It's perfect for large, informal gatherings.

My wife and I and 4 of our adult children with spouses and 6 grandchildren had a wonderful time at the BARN! Mary Beth was very accommodating and she even stopped by one morning to see if we were in need of any additional supplies. All of us loved our time in the house and our time swimming in the pool. There were lots of us, but because the house and the grounds were so spacious, we were able to enjoy one another and still have enough space to be apart!

Beautiful sylvan property with a nice pool.

    Reviewed by: Keith A. on

Large rustic 3 story house converted from a barn that easily accommodated our extended family of 4 couples and 3 individuals. Our stay included a larger multi- family reunion with nearly 30 other people, easily accommodated in the downstairs and on the grounds. Though large groups are not the norm, Doug and Mary-Beth kindly approved the event for this midday special occasion. The week we stayed there was hot so the pool was a welcome part of our visit as was visiting with each other and the meals that we shared together.

    Cozy, comfortable, and charming

    Reviewed by: Anna A. on

The actual property was as promised in the listing description, with some pleasant surprises. The 3rd floor bedrooms are actually much more spacious than they appear in the photos. Complimentary, mini bath amenities were a nice touch. Not mentioned in the listing, but the owner lives on the property, which turned out to be quite convenient. We had an issue with an appliance, but were able to simply run next door to fetch the owner and the problem was solved without incident. We found the owners to be pleasant and friendly, and always asking about our needs to ensure our comfort. Not specified in the listing: coffee maker. Many places these days are switching over to Keurig makers. How do you know what kind of coffee to bring? There are two coffee makers in the kitchen, both drip. Also, it was nice to find the pantry stocked with basics, such as coffee filters, those little things that inevitably get forgotten. A lovely property - would absolutely recommend it to others.

    The ideal weekend getaway

Instead of going the usual route for my sister's bachelorette party, we skipped the "bride squad" shirts and the glitter and the going out, and we opted to get her closest friends together for a make-up free, fuss-free weekend. This house was perfect! We were all barefoot in pajamas or bathing suits the whole time, going back and forth between the pool house and the main house, and everyone was able to move at their own rhythm without inconveniencing anyone else. There's plenty of space both inside and out. We had music on until about 11pm or 12am on the two nights we were there (Friday and Saturday) and the people who decided to go to bed early said they couldn't even hear it from their bedrooms on the 3rd floor. Marybeth, the owner, was lovely, checking in periodically and making sure were weren't out of anything, but never invasive. The kitchen was fully stocked with spices, coffee, sugar, cooking oil, etc, and the two refrigerators held all of the food and drink we needed for 12 people for two days. The beds were comfortable, everything was clean, the towels and linens were provided (even pool towels), and the property was gorgeous. I would definitely book again.

MaryBeth, the owner, was there to greet us and all through out our stay she was so solicitous. We were an extended family of nine adults, five children from 6 to 3, and two infants. At no time did we feel we were on top of one another. There are two lovely sitting/living rooms and various sitting areas to relax. The kids loved all the nooks and crannies to hide in. The swimming pool got a fair amount of use and the bbq was also used by us. Not only would I recommend this place but we would come to it again.

The owner was onsite and readily available to answer any questions we had. Town is just a five minute drive and there are grocery stores, convenience stores, coffee, and even a Walmart close by. Three living room areas provided lots of space to enjoy together. The kitchen was huge and great for family meals. We loved every minute of our stay!

Our stay at the Barn at Gray Mare Hill was absolutely wonderful! We rented out this space for our wedding at the near by Golden Lamb Buttery and it made a perfect weekend even better. Much of our wedding party was traveling in from out of state so it was wonderful to be able to spend the whole weekend together under one roof. Everyone was able to have their own rooms and there are more than enough bathrooms that no one got in each others way. The huge kitchen was a great bonus as we were able to have a family meal one night and all catch up.

MaryBeth and Doug are absolutely amazing! They are so inviting and they have built a beautiful home that they are more than welcome to show you around and share the renovation history.

She made sure we had everything we could possibly need, including the few grocery items we had requested in advance. She showed around and explained the history of the converted barn which we loved learning about. We especially enjoyed walking around the grounds and relaxing on the back porch in the comfortable wicker chairs. We had a tremendous stay at the Barn. We took day trips to the aquarium in Mystic, CT., Boston, and even Maine. Doug and MaryBeth were great hosts. The home is very spacious and lots of room to roam outside. It was still a bit cool for us to use the pool, although it was open. It is very nice to have a Wal-mart close (less than 2 miles) but still be in a rural setting. Our biggest complaint would be that pictures on-line don't really do it justice. Also, MaryBeth made us a wonderful breakfast one morning. It is a great place to stay in New England.

The kitchen was huge and stocked with spices and utensils. We even used the grill outside despite the weather. The rooms were very comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. Mary Beth was very helpful and her breakfast (blueberry pancakes, sausage and fruit) was delicious. On our last day, Mary Beth arranged for us to visit the Bison Farm, which was pretty cool. Needless to say we had an amazing stay here for a snowy weekend and it was great meeting Mary Beth and her husband. We cannot wait to visit again this summer!
